20 May Finding a calling
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” – Isaiah 6:8 (NIV).
Watching God working in the lives of our young men is one of the most rewarding things that happens on our ranch. We have been honored to watch Asher Hughes become a servant of God, one who answered the call found in Isaiah. Asher came to Westview to live at Overstreet House with caregivers Josh and Julia Birney. Asher was a reserved young man, very careful about who he let into his circle of family and trust. Over his years at Westview, he became more inviting to others, more often sharing his heart and infectious smile. We did not know it at the time, but God was preparing him for the mission field.
After graduation, Asher lived with Hughes family in Tuttle, OK. The Hughes are a special family who helped provide a place for Asher to grow as Westview was building the LAUNCH initiative. We have been honored to partner with them more than once! From Tuttle, Asher decided to move Lubbock, Texas, to attend the Adventures in Missions (AIM) Program at the Sunset International Bible Institute in August of 2017.
AIM is a two year apprentice missionary program for college-aged young people. Asher spend eight months in Lubbock in the classroom learning biblical knowledge and how to share it with others. Asher was placed on a mission team to go to Homestead, Miami, Florida, to work with the church there. Asher moved to Miami in April of 2018, where—instead of spending the normal time of 16 months on the mission field—-Asher stayed over three years!! He graduated from the AIM program in 2020, but remained in Florida doing church work before moving back to Lubbock in 2022.
Asher is now married and has a beautiful daughter. He has made Lubbock his home and continues to work for the Kingdom of God there. Thank you, Asher, for answering the call God placed on your heart.
